How to Max All Skills

Overview

So, you're level 78 and you have all the things and you've used all the brain wines and skill books and still, somehow, one or two of your skills aren't maxed. You've applied every point you earned, but when you try to apply a brain wine or skill book, it won't let you. And everyone you ask seems to tell you a different thing and at this point all you want is to know how to fix it so you have all max skills.

Does this sound like you? Then you've come to the right place.

The following step-by-step instructions should help you solve the problem. Good luck!

Step 1

First, make sure you really are level 78 in the game (not on the Codex). Then make sure you have all the things. You can't max all your skills without these items. You need:

Accessories:

Exoskeletons:

Depending on how many skills are below max, you'll also need one or more of each of the following:

Finally, if you have more than one skill that you're unable to upgrade to max, you might want to write down the skills you're having problems with before you begin, so you can check as you go along.

Step 2

Before doing anything, make sure you can't use a skill book or brain wine to upgrade any skill. If you can, do so to every skill that will accept it. Before continuing, you should make sure that there are no skills that will let you apply either a skill book or a brain wine.

Step 3

Apply a skill reset. Each of your skills will decrease by one point and you should now have 11 upgrade points. Don't do anything with them yet.

Step 4

Determine your situation:

  • A. I have one skill that is exactly 1 point lower than max.
  • B. I have one skill that is exactly 2 points below max.
  • C. I have more than one skill that is exactly 1 point below max.
  • D. I have more than one skill that is exactly 2 points below max.
  • E. OMG I don't know what's going on but I'm level 78 in game and this is all messed up and I hate math and just tell me the surefire way to fix this.

Choose the solution that applies to your situation:

  • A. Try to apply a skill book. If you can, problem solved. If you can't, then try to apply a brain wine. If you can, problem solved. Go to Step 5.

  • B. Apply a 2nd skill reset. Each of your skills will decrease by another point and you'll now have 22 unused upgrade points. Don't do anything with them yet. Now apply both a brain wine and a skill book to the skill that was 2 points below max. Then go to Step 5.

  • C. Try to apply a skill book. If you can apply a skill book to more than one skill, get more skill books and apply them until you can't apply anymore. If that doesn't take care of all the skills you were having trouble with, then try to apply a brain wine. If you can apply a brain wine to more than one skill, get more brain wines and apply them until you can't apply anymore. Then go to Step 5.

  • D. Apply a 2nd skill reset. Each of your skills will decrease by another point and you'll now have 22 unused upgrade points. Don't do anything with them yet. Apply both a brain wine and a skill book to each skill that was 2 points below max. Then go to Step 5.

  • E. Apply a 2nd skill reset. Then get enough skill books and brain wines to apply one of each to whatever skills will let you. Keep doing this until you can no longer apply a skill book or brain wine to any skill. Then go to Step 5.

Step 5

Re-apply all the upgrade points you got when you used the skill reset(s). Just keep applying them to your skills until you have no more upgrade points, or until no skill will accept any upgrade point.

Step 6

Admire your newly-maxed skill set, which should have level 15 in Agility, Engineering, Mining, Perception, Stamina, and Survival, and level 13 in all the rest.

Step 7

Profit!

What Did I Just Do?

Skill books and brain wines only work on skills that are naturally below 10. Natural skill level is the level the skill would be if you had no accessories or exoskeleton parts. The only way to raise your natural skill level is to either use the points you get from leveling up, or use skill books/brain wines. If you use only upgrade points to raise a skill to level 10, then that skill won't accept a skill book or brain wine.

Each time you used a skill reset, you subtracted one natural point from each skill, leaving room to apply a skill book or brain wine to any skill you hadn't already applied one to.

In other words, the skill reset(s) just took the "natural" levels of all your skills down low enough so that the skill books and brain wines would work.

Tips for Beginners

A general rule to follow is this: never use an upgrade point to raise any skill past level 8 unless you've already used both a skill book and a brain wine on that skill.

Savvy beginners will obtain 11 skill books and 11 brain wines as early as they can, and use them to raise every skill by 2 points. If you do that, you'll never have to worry about skill troubles later.
